EHRs Win Against Natural Disasters

In times of utter disaster, interoperability between hospitals and clinics is priceless.  The destruction and toll that winds 200 miles per hour took upon the Moore Medical Center in Moore, Oklahoma was total destruction. The structure was annihilated, but all staff, patients and electronic health records were thankfully unscathed. Thanks to EHRs, Oklahoma patients along with their complete medical histories could quickly be transferred to other hospitals within the Norman Regional Health System.

EHRs were quickly on the wish lists of numerous hospitals and clinics after natural disasters like hurricane Katrina, Japan’s 9-magnitude earthquake in 2011 and after hurricane Sandy this past year. Statsitics say that that since 2012 Health IT has more than doubled. Thankfully the Norman hospital system has been using EHRs for the past five years.
